AI Use and Editorial Oversight Policy
Barnakle may use artificial-intelligence tools to support limited parts of its workflow, but responsibility for every published claim remains with people.
Permitted support
AI tools may assist with brainstorming, transcription, translation drafts, data organisation, search-term exploration, summaries for internal review and routine production tasks. Their output is treated as unverified material.
Required human work
A human editor must determine the story’s purpose, evaluate sources, verify claims, review wording, assess risk, approve disclosures and make the final publication decision. AI output is never accepted as a factual source.
Prohibited uses
Barnakle does not knowingly publish fabricated quotations, citations, events, experts or evidence. We do not use AI to impersonate a real contributor, secretly manufacture firsthand reporting or create deceptive documentary imagery.
Disclosure
Routine assistive use that does not materially shape the reader’s understanding may not require an article-level label. Material synthetic media, AI-led analysis, experimental interactive features or other uses a reasonable reader would want to know about should be disclosed clearly.
Privacy and rights
Contributors should not enter confidential source material, unpublished personal information or rights-restricted content into an AI system without authorisation and appropriate safeguards.
