Editorial Standards
These standards govern how Barnakle chooses, researches, writes, reviews, labels, updates and corrects its journalism and educational content.
Accuracy before speed
We would rather publish later than publish information we cannot support. Writers must distinguish established knowledge, emerging evidence, informed interpretation and speculation. Headlines, images and social copy must fairly represent the article.
Independence
Editorial decisions belong to Barnakle. Advertisers, sponsors, affiliate partners and product providers do not receive approval rights over independent coverage. Any material relationship relevant to a reader is disclosed clearly.
Fairness and context
We seek the context necessary to understand a claim, including limitations, credible disagreement and the strength of available evidence. When a person or organisation is the subject of significant criticism, we make a reasonable effort to include its response or accurately describe its established position.
Originality and attribution
Writers must use their own language, attribute reporting and ideas, link to useful primary material when available, and identify quotations accurately. Plagiarism, fabricated quotations, invented sources and manipulated evidence are prohibited.
Editorial review
Stories are edited for accuracy, clarity, structure, sourcing, headline integrity and potential harm. Higher-risk science, climate, medical and health stories may require review by a qualified subject-matter contributor before publication.
Corrections
We correct material errors promptly and explain substantial changes. Minor spelling, grammar and formatting fixes may be made without a correction note when they do not change meaning.
