Image, Copyright and Credit Policy
Images should deepen understanding, respect rights and accurately represent what readers are being shown.
Image sources
Barnakle may use original photography, properly licensed media, public-domain material, press assets used within their terms, diagrams, maps and appropriately disclosed synthetic illustrations. Credits and licence information are retained where required.
Accuracy and manipulation
Documentary images are not altered in ways that mislead readers about the underlying event or evidence. Routine cropping and tonal adjustments are acceptable when they preserve meaning. Composites, reconstructions and illustrations are labelled when context requires it.
AI-generated visuals
Synthetic visuals must not be presented as authentic evidence of a real event, person, place, species or scientific observation. Materially generated or reconstructed images are labelled in the caption or nearby disclosure.
Respect and sensitivity
We consider privacy, dignity, cultural context, safety and the public interest before publishing sensitive imagery. We avoid visuals chosen solely to shock or exaggerate.
Rights concerns
If you believe Barnakle has used material incorrectly, contact us with the page URL, identification of the work, your relationship to the rights holder and supporting information. We will assess the request and may temporarily restrict the material while reviewing it.
