COMMERCIAL TRANSPARENCY

Advertising and Sponsorship Policy

Advertising can support Barnakle, but it must never be confused with independent editorial work.

Last updated September 9, 2026

01

Clear labels

Paid placements are labelled with plain language such as “Advertisement,” “Sponsored,” or “Paid partnership.” Disclosures appear where readers are likely to notice them, not hidden in a general policy or placed only after the commercial message.

02

Editorial independence

Advertisers cannot purchase favourable coverage, suppress accurate reporting or preview unrelated editorial work. Sponsored content may be created with a partner, but Barnakle retains the right to require accuracy, clarity and suitable presentation.

03

What we will not accept

We may reject advertising that is deceptive, discriminatory, unsafe, exploitative, unlawful, inconsistent with our audience’s trust, or designed to imitate independent journalism. Acceptance of an advertisement is not an endorsement.

04

Targeting and privacy

Advertising technology, if introduced, will be described in our Privacy Policy and consent controls. Barnakle will seek to minimise unnecessary collection and avoid knowingly targeting children with behavioural advertising.

05

Corrections and complaints

Factual concerns about sponsored material can be submitted through our contact page. Commercial partners do not receive immunity from correction or removal when content violates our standards.
